Ph.D. Residencies
Face-to-face residencies in convenient locations give you important opportunities to
- Meet with faculty members for individual advising sessions
- Enhance your writing, research, and critical-thinking skills
- Share experiences and insights with hundreds of students who share your interests
- Attend seminars on a broad range of relevant topics
- Work directly with student support staff
Timing*
Residencies are timed to enhance your learning at key milestones in your development as a scholar-practitioner.
- Milestone 1: Orientation (within 90 days of completion of Foundations course)
Goals: Socialization into Walden, community-building, and introductory skills - Milestone 2: Beginning Research (within 18 months of start date)
Goals: Introduction to research skills, self-assessment, and skill development - Milestone 3: Dissertation Work (by end of third year)
Goals: Dissertation conceptualization and writing - Milestone 4: Scholar-Practitioner (third year and beyond)
Goals: Presenting research and dissertation publishing
Note: Instead of fulfilling Milestone 4 at a Walden residency, you may choose to attend a professional conference (attended by Walden faculty and approved by the Residencies Team).
*Students in the Ph.D. in Psychology licensure specializations (Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, and School Psychology) attend only the Milestone 1 residency before completing their residency requirements through the Academic Year in Residence.
Locations
Residencies convene nearly every month for either four or six days at a university, conference center, or hotel in the United States or abroad.
