Community Engagement

Changing Lives for Good

Walden alumni are leading change in communities across the nation and around the world. In advancing social change, they apply the knowledge and skills they developed as Walden students. And they enhance those skills in such Walden community programs as the National Day of Service.

Our Outstanding Alumni Award recipients illustrate what you could achieve with a Walden education:

Dr. Souror Baetjer
Ph.D. in Health Services
Dr. Baetjer developed an exemplary continuing-education allied health program at Raritan Valley Community College. She independently sought out instructional resources, surveyed the community for program needs, and won immediate statewide recognition for the program.

Dr. Leo Parvis
Ph.D. in Health Services
Dr. Parvis has worked tirelessly to promote cultural diversity in his workplace, his town, and beyond. As an educator, author, and entrepreneur, Parvis has been a model for those who want to be the impetus for social change in the world around them.

Dr. David Boyd
Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences
Dr. Boyd was appointed director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s SAFECOM program in 2003. He was asked to revitalize the program, which promotes interoperable wireless communications among the nation’s emergency first responders. Within six months, the program was functional again and grew over the next two years.

Dr. Sharon T. Freeman
Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences
Dr. Freeman is an entrepreneur, author, and global change agent. She works to promote growth and export development for small, minority, and women-owned enterprises throughout the world.
